Copyright protection covers any original expression
which is fixed in some medium. The key concept here is "expression": whereas
a patent protects a concept in any form, a copyright protects an author's original expression of
a concept, not the concept itself.
Once again, there is a wide breadth to the
materials which can be protected. Obviously, written works (such as this book/website)
are fixed in computer memory or on paper and thus are copyright protected. In addition
plays, movies, paintings, sculptures, web sites, calendars, photographs, audio recordings,
and more. In general, almost anything with even the smallest trace of original expression
to it, and which meets a few other basic requirements, is protectable by means of
copyright law.
